The publisher was afraid to release the work as it was, so he changed something in it. After years the masterpiece by Dreiser can be read as it was planned originally.
The novel shows how acute, wise and accurate the author was in his views. He was perhaps the first to depict a woman - crafty, with the behavior beyond the moral norms, with the limited freedom of actions. For sanctimonious America of 19th century it was like ribaldry. Dreiser shows how dangerous for every human being hesitating in finding one's position in life, not deciding and not making own choice; and how dangerous waiting for the fate's sign and not doing anything by oneself. Such choices in the book leads it's characters to the end or to the glory, to the happiness or to the abyss. This masterpiece is full of detailed analysis of the heroes, deep immersion into their psychology. Being followed for the author through all this plot turns attentive reader will be rewarded by the author's talent to reflect the deep psychology of the images.

donal grant by george macdonald

The main quist of the novel is the story about a young teacher Donald Grant. He leaves home after finishing college and starts his journey to make his way in the world to a nearby coastal town in Northeastern Scotland. He meets a shoemaker who becomes his spiritual preceptor, and finds job and place to live in the nearby castle. As the story goes on readers meet a solitary, drug addicted uncle, his pretty but soulless niece, and his spoiled and insolent son who is up to all kinds of naughty flirting with the shoemaker's daughter. The most fascinating and interesting part of this novel is the element of the supernatural which Mr. MacDonald brings in. There are ghost noises, misteries, somnabulisms, secret rooms, murder, scandal, and ghost stories, myths and legends. Ghosts to George MacDonald represent part of the large region of the Spirit which exists beside and beyond everyone of us, and he never posits their actual existence. They are never considered to be the power of evil or fear, because everything in this world exists due to the will of God. There are some parts in the book that are written in Scotch dialect. That's very interesting, and makes the reader to think about what the author meant. ''Donald Grant by George MacDonald'' is worth reading. It is fascinating!

The Souls of Black Folk

This book is the masterpiece of African-American thought. Published in 1903, this collection of essays written by DuBois quickly became a cornerstone for future black progressives who wanted to change American society since the days of the American Civil War. Every essay in this book is a perfect example of intellectual prowess, expressive and amazing language, and astonishing journey into the conditions of America's black population. Over and over, author calls it the way he sees it and there is no rage or hysterical claims in his words. DuBois's writings are the prototypes of consecutive, reasoned analysis. He aims not to divide but to reveal, not to create divisions but understanding. This is a ‘must-read’ for everyone interested in race relations and intellectual history. DuBois never saw the struggle for civil rights in the 1960's or its continuing legacy to modern days. This book explains the underpinnings of that movement. Through intellectual examination, excellent prose, and an steadfast belief in what is right and wrong, DuBois's contributions continue to resonate nowadays. Most of the problems, raised by DuBois are still important today, and this is a tribute to the man, not only as a scholar, but as someone who was continually adapting his views in the best image and interests of black people.
