Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions

A series of meditations and prayers by John Donne, an English Jacobean poet, preacher and a major representative of the metaphysical poets of the 16th-17th centuries. The experience of drawing near to death laid the foundation of this work. The author, recovering from a serious illness, reflects upon health, pain, and sickness. The work consists of twenty-three parts corresponding to each stage of the illness, each part including “meditation”, “exhortation” and “prayer”. Here we meet magnetism, cosmography, alchemy and Platonism. “Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions” appears a first-hand experience of physical death, recorded step by step.

English as she is spoke

English as she is spoke is an English phrasebook intended for Portuguese students of English. The book was written by Jose da Fonseca and Pedro Carolino in 1855. Everything seems reasonable and fine but there was just one problem: the authors did not speak English at all and they did not even have an English-Portuguese dictionary at their disposal. When collecting materials for the phrasebook,da Fonseca and Carolino used Portuguese-French dictionary and a French-English dictionary. As one can imagine, the process of formation of this book was complicated and the result is quite amusing. Using such book as a travel-guide a Portuguese can easily insult English-speakers. The book also includes a section of "Idiotisms and Proverbs."
